The asbestos gaskets are made of silicate fibers while the non-asbestos gaskets are produced using carbon-based or organic materials. Asbestos gaskets are comparatively cheaper than non-asbestos gaskets.

These are used in: air compressors, diesel engines, pipelines, and most other industrial and marine applications. Remember that as a general rule you should select the thinnest material possible for your application.
